Pack Sizing info

Please Note:
1. H245 or H250 harnesses can be attached directly to a long lens case. A pack frame is only needed if you want to carry a heavy tripod or if you are rather tall and want a more comfortable fit.
2. These pack frames are NOT designed to replace the large and heavy divider system "kitchen sink" packs (such as the Pro Trekker, Extreme Backpack etc.).

These frames provid the suspension of a mountaineering internal frame pack and include the following features:

  • A pair of 71cm tall aluminum staves which are removable and can be custom-bent
  • Haul loop
  • Vertical lifter straps for the shoulder straps (which relieves the pressure on the upper shoulders)
  • Vertically adjustable shoulder straps for a custom fit on both short and tall people,
  • Adjustable back foam pad and a thick lumbar pad with a breathable lining (the same fabric used on the inside of our belts)
  • Two harness sizes and four belt sizes for a custom fit
  • We have designed a series of special heavy-duty belts for these packs. The belts are easily removable in the field so it can be used independently with various Kinesis pouches attached.

Important Notes About Waist Belts

When using a pack frame with the standard-weight Kinesis Black Belt (B107, B108 etc.) a free B503 adapter is required -- please request this when placing your order. No adapter is needed if you are using a Heavy-duty belt (B308, B309 etc.) as these belts have "stave pockets" sewn in to them.

Warning: If you are using a previously purchased a Heavy-duty Belt (pre-2005), check to insure it has special vertical stitching on the stave pockets, otherwise the staves on the P017-series or P450-series Journeyman pack may slip through the side of this pocket. Older Heavy Duty belts did not have this feature but can be added to any belt if returned to us for modification. This is not a problem with the P019 as it uses a wider stave.

[P017] Narrow Heavy-duty Pack Frame w/o Harness, $56.00

[P017a] Narrow Heavy-duty Pack Frame (w/ Small H245 & Y205), $99.00 (for average torso heights)

[P017b] Narrow Heavy-duty Pack Frame (w/ Large H250 & Y205), $99.00 (for taller torso heights)

This is a double-wide, instead of triple-wide like the P019. It is lighter with no internal foam stiffiners (but with the same aluminum staves). Because of the the narrower design, a tripod cannot be mounted next to the long lens case or Journeyman Pack. It is primarily designed for use with the Journeyman pack on multi-day trips where a sleeping bag, tent and foam pad are needed. On day hikes the frame can be jettisoned -- then the harness can be attached to the Kinesis Journeyman pack providing you with a lean and mean alpine pack! These models feature 20mm (3/4") wide staves.

[P019] Heavy-duty Pack Frame (w/ Y205 & w/o Harness), $56.00

[P019a] Heavy-duty Pack Frame (w/ small H245 & Y205), $99.00 (for average torso heights)

[P019b] Heavy-duty Pack Frame (w/ large H250 & Y205), $99.00 (for taller torso heights)

Will accommodate any single Kinesis long lens case and a heavy tripod with head or it will also hold two short double-wide or one long double-wide cases.
The frame is designed to hold cases on the left three-quarters of the frame, leaving the right quarter for attaching a tripod or single-wide pouches. The provides a balanced load without the necessity of carrying the tripod on outside center of the pack (which tends to pull back on your shoulders). This is a feature not found on any other shorter "system" photo packs.
If a tripod is not being carried, the long lens case can be mounted in the center. These models use 25mm (1") wide aluminum staves.

P017 Specifications
72hx23w cm
(28.25hx9w")
1 kg (2 lbs. 3 oz.) w/ H250 harness but w/o belt. B308 Lrg Belt adds 283 g (10 oz.).

Includes one Y205 strap for stabilizing a long lens case.

P019 Specifications
72hx30w cm
(28.25hx12w")
1.4 kg (4 lbs.) but w/o belt. B308 Lrg Belt adds 283 g (10 oz.).

Includes one Y205 strap for stabilizing a long lens case.

Note: depth & width dimensions noted above are maximums near the bottom of the pack -- it tapers up towards the top.

The Journeyman can be attached to the P017
or P019-series pack frame for multi-day trips.
There is ample room for a sleeping bag and pad below the pack. Attached to the Journeyman on the front is an
E330 and a lightweight jacket.

(Please note that the prototype photo shown features an
E180 lens pouch high on the side of the pack.
The current design has this pouch sitting much lower -- over the lower pocket.)

Shown above is the L621 long lens case, a C640 and an E280 attached to the P019b Pack Frame.
This would allow one to carry a 600/4 lens with a body attached (or the 400/2.8 with the hood in the shooting mode with a body attached) plus another SLR body with a 70-200/2.8 or 80-400 attached with the hood in the shooting position. A monopod or tripod is attached on the side. With a ballhead it carries better inverted for better weight distribution. The ballhead is stuffed inside an E280 for protection. Although not shown, we recommend a Heavy-duty Belt with such a load.

The above is the Journeyman I used for a snow climb up a local Utah peak called Mt. Timpanogos. It weighed in at about 28 lbs (13 kg) with water and food. The crampons, ax and helmet were held in place with several Y204 straps.
