[P450a] Journeyman Modular Pack, $166.00 (w/ Sm/Med H245 harness, w/o belt)
[P450b] Journeyman Modular Pack, $166.00 (w/ Med/Lrg H250 harness, w/o belt)
Description
The Journeyman pack is a multipurpose internal frame bag with a large unpadded zippered main compartment. It is a half-and-half pack -- designed for half photo equipment and half personal effects (such as a jacket, lunch & climbing/skiing gear). This pack is not like the popular Lowepro Trekker series, which is a heavily padded pack, primarily designed to carry or store only camera equipment, including an entire camera system. The Journeyman is not a "carry the kitchen sink" pack. It is similar to the Lowepro Rover in function, but has no permanent padded compartments and can thus be used as a non-photo pack too. Padded compartments to house camera gear must be added separately --choose either the V090 or V092 ($63). Smaller holster cases (C380, C500 etc.) are also commonly used (P111 adapter required to attach most pouches to the inside of JM pack other than [except E530, V092 or S090]).
What sets this pack apart from others is its adjustability and versatility. People of different heights and body builds alike will find a comfortable fit.
Our opinion is that if you are carrying a photo pack, then your photography gear, the most often-accessed items, should be at the top of the pack. Unlike many photo packs, you don't have to set the pack down to access your gear, as most of the pouches and pockets are top-accessible. The aluminum staves (or stays) keep the pack from collapsing, keeping it in an upright position. It is also an excellent all-purpose pack for travel, day hikes, mountaineering or backcountry skiing. Now you can purchase one pack for both photography and travel or mountaineering.

Pack Size
The Journeyman pack is functionally like the Lowepro S&F Rover, Lowepro Stealth, the Tamrac 752 Super Photo Day pack or the Tenba P151 Day Pak. It is about the same size as a Lowepro Photo Trekker, but is NOT designed to carry photo-only equipment like the Trekkers. Please note that this pack is substantially larger than the average day or book pack. If you are looking for a small pack to hold a lunch and maybe a raincoat, then consider a simple book pack. Many are short enough to fit above your Kinesis belt system.
The Journeyman has additional capacity for a fleece jacket, a days worth of food, water bottle, etc. This size is ideal for quick overnight assignments or those jobs that take you far from the car, where you need to be self-contained (esp. winter or cold-weather shoots). It also has features not typically found on other photo packs such as a pair of ice ax loops, compression straps and CamelBak-style water bladder compartment (with a corresponding weatherproof hose egress slot). It is designed to meet all domestic U.S. airline carry-on specs.

Important Notes About Waist Belts

When using the Journeyman pack with the standard-weight Kinesis Black Belt (B107, B108 etc.) or the B206 Basic Belt, a free B503 adapter is required -- please request this when placing your order. No adapter is needed if you are using a Heavy-duty belt (B308, B309 etc.) as these belts have "stave pockets" sewn in to them.
Warning: If you are using a previously purchased a Heavy-duty Belt, check to insure it has vertical stitching on the lower part of the stave pockets, otherwise the staves on the P450 will slip through this pocket (the [old] P410 JM pack used a wider, but heavier stave and did not present this problem). Older H.D. belts did not have this feature but can be added to any belt if returned to us for modification.

[D636] Laptop Case, $59.00 More Info

Laptop case which attaches inside the Journeyman pack in either a vertical or horizontal position. This provides you with a choice of access--from the top of the pack or from the side.

Recommended Accessories (see right-hand side-bar for additional photos)
- Camera Modules -- Since this pack has no internal padding, camera equipment must be housed in a padded case like a V090 or V092 (common purchase with JM packs), any holster case or lens pouch. A P111 adapter is required to hang most cases or pouches (except V090, V092 or E530).
- Tripod or Monopod -- To attach a tripod in the center of the pack you will need the optional Y204 strap and a T164 or T317 pouch (monopod can fit in side pocket w/o addtl straps). A Kinesis tripod bag can be attached to the outside/center of the this pack, too. See the right-hand side bar for photos of this feature.
- Adding Pouches to the Outside -- wo Kinesis single-wide pouches, such as the A130 water bottle pouch or a small lens pouches (E105, E165 or E280), can be attached to either side of the pack. Two single-wide or one double-wide pouch(s) can be attached to the outside center of the pack. The A355 or much larger P069 is good choice for an unpadded pouch.
- For extending (overnight) trips with the Journeyman add the P017 Pack Frame -- visit this page.
- Hydration Bladders -- We stock the tough Nalgene models.
- B503 Adapter -- (free w/ pack purchase) is required to tie the frame and most belts together (also see note above).
- P111 Adapter -- Needed if you want to hang a padded Kinesis case inside the pack (not required for V090, V092 or E530).

P450 with a P069 add-on pocket (back). The P069 adds 6.9 liters (421 cu in) of addtl capacity and can be worn separately with a harness as a hydration pack.
Harness removed to show back pad. It is constructed of a three-dimensional breathable knit fabric.
The back pad folds down (using Velcro) providing quick access to the staves and waist belt. Note that the staves are sitting in a B503 Adapter (partially hidden) which is attached to the belt (B107 shown).
D636, C500 (C380, C382 or C580 will also fit) & E280 inside the JM pack (C500 & E280 require the P111 adapter). Laptop can be attached vertically (top pix) to the daisy-chain connectors on the front panel or attached horizontally (bottom pix).
The curved zipper opening of the P450 provides a "hatch" for accessing gear near the top of the pack. Top pix shows the C500 & E280 (both attached to a P111).
As per a customer recommendation, we have added a new design feature -- a direct-to-frame compression strap. A Y204 or Y205 strap attaches to this point (over the pocket) providing a total sway-free tripod. Also shown is the covered hydration hose portal.
A monopod in the side pocket -- additional straps are not needed. A tripod with a ballhead is best inverted (less top heavy for a better carry) with optional Y204 strap and T317 pouch.
P450 with optional accessories: water bottle in side pocket, E280 pouch in the center (w/ Y305 compression strap -- Y204 or Y205 will also work). Ice ax attached using Y204 strap.
Inside the JM pack is a mesh pocket for an optional hydration bladder. Also shown are the daisy chain loops for a laptop computer case or P111 adapter, S090 or E530 inserts.
20mm-wide aluminum staves (6061-T651) provide a semi-rigid support. They can be easily removed and rebent to your back.
