Rain & Dust Covers

To cover a pouch or belt system,
but not for covering a lens or camera outside a case.

Although all our products are sewn with urethane-coated, water-repellent fabrics, some people shooting in extra nasty conditions may require more protection such as that offered by an external rain shell (in the 70s we called it waterproof, but now we can only legally say waterrepellent). Our rain covers are constructed of light-weight 70 denier rip-stop nylon with a urethane-coating. Available in one color -- a light grey, which makes it suitable as a heat or dust resisitant shell in hot climates.
The advantage of this system over other brands of waist-packs, that incorporate built-in rain covers, is that instead of fumbling with four to six little rain covers, you have only ONE to deal with when hit with a surprize downpour or dust storm.
All models includes a convenient storage (a modified unpadded F040 pouch) pouch shown below.

The N430 is slightly taller than this dated photo.

[N430] Small System Rain Cover, $19.00

Suitable to cover up a double-wide and single-wide pouch combined (up to a triple-wide). The N330 has been redesigned to cover the C640 XL Holster Case (and consequently renamed the N430 in July 2003). This cover can be used either vertically or horizontally or over a holster case while carried on a chest harness.

46hx33wx14d cm (18hx13wx5.5d")
96 g (3.4 oz.) w/ belt pouch

[N950] Large System Rain Cover, $23.00

Suitable to cover up an entire belt system up to a large size. If the majority of your pouches are small in size (not holster cases), then this will fit an XL size belt. Because of the shockcorded feature, it will also work with smaller loads too. May not cover tall cases such as the C640 XL Holster Case.

30hx95wx12d cm (11.75hx37.50wx4.75d")
147 g (5.2 oz.) w/ belt pouch

Quick Use Feature
Because the attachment points for this rain cover are on the outside edges, it can be pulled down for instant accessibility without removing the whole cover. If the weather picks up again, simply pull it over with no time lost.

Storage Pouch Provided
Each rain cover comes with an "old style unpadded F040" pouch that can be attached to your belt or piggy-backed unto other larger cases. When not storing your rain cover inside, this unpdadded flat pouch is also suitable for cell phones, Maglite®, Leatherman®, sunglasses etc. Fits on a Kinesis belt or has a web loop sewn to the back to fit on your regular pants belt.

We also stock rain covers for your lens pouches (not attached to a belt), long lens cases, backpacks or packframes.

Why we do NOT make long lens rain covers…

We have had requests for shooting raincovers -- for use with a camera and lens, especially long telephoto lenses (300/2.8 and larger). At this point we don't offer any models. I have studied this topic and my current opinion is that to make an effective raincover it has to: One, have no seams (which is nearly impossible to design) or use factory seam taping and two, utilize a heavy "above average" urethane waterproof coating. The seam taping is a rather specialized process which with our small volume we can't justify. The heavy urethane coating would also make the product very stiff. TV cameras, such as those used in an outdoor stadium, use a heavy vinyl fabric instead of lighter, more supple nylon. It is waterproof, but is not very portable which is something still shooters need.

Visit this link for a listing of manufacturers that make long lens case rain covers.

Waterproof vs. Weatherproof

All the nylon fabrics we use on our products have a .50 or .75 oz. waterproof ureathane coating on the back side. The problem with any sewn product is that the needle holes from the sewing machine instantly cause the waterproof fabric to become vunerable to moisture. Because of this, we don't really decalare our products as waterproof, rather weatherproof.
In a light snowfall or drissle or quick down-pour our cases w/o an additional raincover are fine, but for extended time in such weather we recommend extra protection. In the apparel industry, mountaineering parkas or sailing foul-weather gear is usually seam taped which renders the clothing waterproof or in the case with GoreTex® products they are "waterproof / breathable." The practice of seam taping is not commonly used in the making of packs or bags. There are too many seams and webbing intrusions to make seam taping practical. We do not offer a "camera rain cover" for this very reason. Many on the market are not seam taped and are therefore not waterproof.
